Mozilla Launches Petition Urging Apple to Reset Interest-Based Ad Identifiers on Monthly Basis

Mozilla, the company behind Firefox, today launched a petition urging Apple to reset the unique IDs used to serve interest-based ads in the App Store and Apple News apps on the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple TV on a monthly basis.

Mozilla takes aim at Apple's recent iPhone privacy ad in a blog post:

Apple's latest marketing campaign — "Privacy. That's iPhone" — made us raise our eyebrows.

It's true that Apple has an impressive track record of protecting users' privacy, from end-to-end encryption on iMessage to anti-tracking in Safari.

But a key feature in iPhones has us worried, and makes their latest slogan ring a bit hollow.

Each iPhone that Apple sells comes with a unique ID (called an "identifier for advertisers" or IDFA), which lets advertisers track the actions users take when they use apps. It's like a salesperson following you from store to store while you shop and recording each thing you look at. Not very private at all.

These identifiers can already be manually reset under Settings > Privacy > Advertising on iOS devices and under Settings > General > Privacy on Apple TV, but Mozilla is asking for "a real cap" with an automatic monthly reset to make it "harder for companies to build a profile about you over time."

"If Apple makes this change, it won't just improve the privacy of iPhones — it will send Silicon Valley the message that users want companies to safeguard their privacy by default," wrote Ashley Boyd, Mozilla's VP of Advocacy.

Interest-based ads in the App Store and Apple News app are based on information such as your App Store search history and Apple News reading history. Apple makes it easy to opt out, but Mozilla argues that "most people don't know that feature even exists, let alone that they should turn it off."

We'll provide an update if Apple responds.Worth Reading:hacking apps

iOS 13 Expected to Feature Dark Mode, Redesigned Volume Indicator, Improved iPad Multitasking, and More

Ahead of Apple introducing iOS 13 at WWDC in June, 9to5Mac's Guilherme Rambo has shared new details about what to expect. The report cites sources familiar with the matter and help from developer Steve Troughton-Smith.

iOS 13 Dark Mode concept by Léo Vallet

First, the report claims that a long-awaited systemwide Dark Mode is coming to the iPhone and iPad with iOS 13:

There will be a system-wide Dark Mode that can be enabled in Settings, including a high contrast version, similar to what's already available on macOS. Speaking of macOS, iPad apps that run on the Mac using Marzipan will finally take advantage of the Dark Mode support on both systems.

Improved multitasking is expected on the iPad with iOS 13, including support for multiple windows and stackable cards in apps:

Each window will also be able to contain sheets that are initially attached to a portion of the screen, but can be detached with a drag gesture, becoming a card that can be moved around freely, similar to what an open-source project called "PanelKit" could do.

These cards can also be stacked on top of each other, and use a depth effect to indicate which cards are on top and which are on the bottom. Cards can be flung away to dismiss them.

To the joy of everyone, iOS 13 is said to feature a new volume HUD that is hopefully far less obtrusive than the current one. Apple's software engineering chief Craig Federighi hinted at this in an email to a customer earlier this year.

iPads are also expected to receive a new standard undo gesture for text input on iOS 13beyond the existing shake-to-undo. The report claims the new gesture is initiated with a three-finger tap on the keyboard area, and then users can slide left or right to undo and redo actions interactively.

Additional gestures are expected to be introduced in iOS 13 that allow for the selection of multiple items in table views and collection views. Users will supposedly be able to "drag with multiple fingers on a list or collection of items to draw a selection, similar to clicking and dragging in Finder on the Mac."

The report adds that Safari for iPad on iOS 13 will automatically ask for a desktop version of websites when necessary, while the Mail app will organize messages into searchable categories such as marketing, purchases, travel, "not important," and more. The new Mail app is also said to have a "read later" queue.

Font management is also expected to improve in iOS 13, with a new font management menu in the Settings app.

Other features expected in iOS 13 include a redesigned Reminders app that extends to the Mac, improved "Hey Siri" rejection for common ambient noises such as laughter and crying babies, improved multilingual support for keyboards and dictation, and expanded in-app printing controls, according to 9to5Mac.Also Read:Best Alternatives to 123Movies

How to lock individual apps on your smartphone

If you want to give your phone to someone else, it might be a good idea to prevent them from opening your apps. WhatsApp, Gmail, and the image gallery can all contain private content that you may want to keep to yourself. But fear not - you can protect sensitive information from prying eyes and still hand over your smartphone with app locks.
Method 1: best lock apps for Android

The Play Store is packed with apps that can be used to block apps. The search term ‘app lock’ will deliver dozens of results. We chose two examples that won’t require too many permissions from you. We took a closer look at the following two apps:

App Lock from Keepsafe

CM Security Antivirus Applock from Cheetah Mobile

Let’s start with a warning: app lock apps aren’t real protection against curious people, if they're clever enough! They are often not even able to completely hide the last viewed content in an app; the most recent messages can be quickly seen before the code entry appears.

Until the Android interface and the App Locker work better together, you are better off switching to a method that comes with Android’s factory software. These methods are presented below.

Tip: Definitely lock the settings app, because otherwise a resourceful person can simply uninstall the app locker and bypass it.
App Lock from Keepsafe

Keepsafe doesn’t let you take screenshots, so we’ll have to explain our observations with text. First of all, I like the fact that the app doesn't require any authorizations. The setup wizard asks for the type of lock: PIN, pattern, or fingerprint. You don’t have to register a fingerprint again since the app uses the fingerprint already stored in your Android phone. This builds trust because it means the app can’t send your fingerprint back to the app creators.

AppLock blocks apps… insecurely. / © ANDROIDPIT

You need to provide your email address for security, but you can also skip this point. The app then sends you to the system settings, where you need to grant access to the data usage. Without it, the app can’t tell if it has been opened. You can then return to App Lock, where you can select apps to lock. Popular apps like Settings or WhatsApp are listed on top, and the rest follow alphabetically.

App Lock: Fingerprint Password

When we tried it out, we only blocked WhatsApp. Afterwards, we went to the home screen and started WhatsApp. App Lock lays over WhatsApp and prevents it from being operated. A stranger is unable to send a message or read other messages without a PIN, pattern, or your fingerprint. Unfortunately, App Lock doesn’t react fast enough. WhatsApp can still be used for a short time despite App Lock. So if a curious person opens your WhatsApp several times and goes back to the home screen, they can shimmy through your chats and read the latest messages. Even screenshots can be seen in this short window. So the results are disappointing.
CM Security Antivirus Applock from Cheetah Mobile

CM Security works similarly to Keepsafe’s App Lock, with a pattern that covers protected apps. Alternatively, you can use your fingerprint. When you set up the app it asks for access to your contacts. We were able to reject authorization without any negative effects. As a plan B for a forgotten pattern, CM works with a security question. The app also asks for access to data usage during setup.

Note: Cheetah Mobile also offers the App CM AppLock, which we omitted. It requires all-inclusive access to your location, files, camera, number and more. All this data is unnecessary for the app’s core function.

AppLock - Fingerprint Unlock

CM Security Antivirus Applock is actually well thought out. The app can even hide your notifications if you give it permission on request. Unfortunately, even CM can't block apps fast enough. A quick glance at the most recent notifications is still possible.

Another disadvantage typical of Cheetah Mobile is the annoying internal advertising. CM wants to recommend even more of its products to you and to explain how your smartphone is horribly optimized. Our recommendation for optimizing is to uninstall the CM app.
Method 2: Block apps with tools you have
Samsung’s Secure Folder

With Samsung smartphones, you can store apps, pictures and other files in the Secure Folder. This is shielded from your main account by a separate code. You can't even access the data in the secure folder externally with a USB cable and a PC.

The Secure Folder in Samsung smartphones offers a real private area. / © AndroidPIT

Using the Secure Folder does mean that you will need to completely setup WhatsApp or other apps again. Notifications are sent from the Secure Folder to your main profile. A luxurious settings menu makes it easy to set your desired privacy options. In return, you get protection at the system level, which makes it difficult even for resourceful spies.
Huawei/Honor PrivateSpace

The Huawei EMUI user interface offers a similar feature to PriveSpace. In this case as well images, data and apps are isolated by the main user, but you don’t need to retrieve apps to put them there. Instead, you can create a second user on your Honor or Huawei smartphone. To start the protected area, you simply use a different finger on the lock screen than you use for the main profile.

Honor View 10: Secure Folder and other features
Android features for blocking apps

Unlike apps, Android's features work reliably. Unfortunately, they are not available to everyone. The following features were introduced with Android 5.0 Lollipop in autumn 2014.

Use a second user account

Pin an app
Create a user or guest account

If the apps above aren’t reliable enough for you, you should use the operating system’s options. If the temporary user isn’t meant to use your main profile, you can quickly create a guest account or a second user account on your smartphone. You can do this through a button located above the quick settings on the top.

Tap on one of the icons above the quick settings and add a user. / © AndroidPIT

Simply create a new user. They will have their own account or no Google account at all. They’ll only be allowed to install apps from the Play Store, and can’t make phone calls, send SMS messages, or access others’ data. This of course also includes your apps. If you set it up as a user and not as a guest, you can even regularly pass the phone to another person, who can store their data on it too.
Screen lock

Maybe reverse logic is right for you: simply determine which app (singular!) other people may use. Thanks to the lock screen on Android 5.0 Lollipop, Android has mastered how this trick works. Simply pin the apps that can be opened without unlocking the screen.

Pin your apps. / © AndroidPIT

Locked apps can be opened by simultaneously pressing the back key and the multitasking key. Then Android will ask for the screen lock pattern if you’ve set it that way. So in principle, all your apps are blocked, except the pinned ones.
Conclusion

App lock applications for Android could be a good idea, but their effect on security shouldn’t be overestimated. Android resources or manufacturer features on the system level reach deeper and are harder to find a way around. Still, there are reasons for using an app lock app, and these methods can help you. If you have a different method locking your apps, let us know in the comments section below. We are always on the lookout for cool new lock apps for Android. Also Read:jihosoft Free iPhone Data Recovery

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek Speaks Out on Dispute With Apple Over App Store Policies

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek elaborated on his company's complaint against Apple with the European Commission in a speech today at the International Conference on Competition in Berlin, according to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter.

Spotify has accused Apple of unfairly applying its 30 percent App Store commission. While a 70-30 revenue split applies to most apps, including Spotify, others like Uber and Deliveroo are exempt since Apple's commission does not apply to "goods or services that will be consumed outside of the app."

Ek doubled down on this issue, referring to Apple's commission as a "competitor tax":

Let's call this 30% revenue-share exactly what it is – a competitor tax. Importantly, Apple's posture towards Spotify became increasingly hostile after Apple acquired a rival music streaming service and launched Apple Music. But until now, we felt like we didn't have much of a choice.

Spotify Premium normally costs $9.99 per month, the same price as Apple Music, but if Spotify were to offer that price on the App Store, it would only receive $6.99 of that amount after Apple's cut.

Spotify did experiment with offering Premium for $12.99 per month through its iOS app starting in 2014, netting it $9.09 per subscriber after Apple's cut, but this put it at a competitive disadvantage since Apple Music is $9.99 per month. Spotify has since stopped allowing upgrading to Premium through its iOS app.

As we all know, iOS and the App Store is the only way to offer our service to anyone with an iPhone or iPad. That's over a billion people around the world. So not being on their platform is just not an option for us — or really for any competing internet service in this day and age. Apple knows this.

If we wish to use Apple's payment system to allow our customers to upgrade to our Premium service, we must pay that 30% tax. This means we cannot be price competitive because we are forced to increase our cost to consumers … while Apple avoids the tax all together and can offer Apple Music at a much lower, more attractive rate. This is especially damaging to a company like ours who already pays out a significant portion of our revenues to record labels and music publishers.

The issue doesn't end there, as Apple's App Store review guidelines prevent Spotify from letting users know that they can subscribe to Premium for $9.99 per month on the web or other platforms. The guidelines also prevent Spotify from advertising discounts and other promotions in its iOS app.

We are essentially faced with a "gag order" that prevents us from communicating with our own users about our service. From dictating how we communicate with our own customers to imposing an unjustified tax, Apple isn't playing fair. Let me be clear: we have no desire to step into the spotlight on this issue. But we also believe we have no other choice.

Ek concluded with a ping-pong metaphor:

It's like inviting you to a match on our ping-pong table and then forcing you to play blindfolded while we change the rules throughout the game.

On a new website titled Time to Play Fair, Spotify also says it is not allowed to be on the HomePod or Siri, along with other accusations.

Spotify is aiming for all apps to be subject to the same fair set of rules, including Apple Music. Spotify also believes consumers should not be "forced to use systems with discriminatory tariffs such as Apple's" and that Apple should not be able to place "unfair restrictions" on marketing and promotions.

Hands-On With the 17" LG Gram and a Look at Apple's Old 17" MacBook Pro 2019

LG recently introduced a 17-inch ultralight laptop, which we thought would be interesting to take a look at in light of rumors suggesting Apple may be planning to introduce a 16 to 16.5-inch MacBook Pro in the future.

We compared the LG Gram to a 15-inch MacBook Pro, but we also thought it might be fun to take a look at Apple's old 2011 17-inch MacBook Pro at the same time, as it was the last larger-display notebook Apple released.

Subscribe to the MacRumors YouTube channel for more videos.

Priced at $1,700, the 17-inch LG Gram features a 2560 x 1600 display with a slim and light enclosure. It has a full keyboard and a decent-sized trackpad, with speakers built into the bottom of the device.

The bezels at the top and the sides are super slim, and bezel size reduction is one of the ways Apple could expand the size of its current MacBook Pro lineup without making the enclosure larger.

The 17-inch LG Gram weighs just under three pounds, making it a pound lighter than the 15-inch MacBook Pro. The LG Gram is an impressive demonstration of how far technology has come over the course of the last eight years, as compared to Apple's 2011 17-inch MacBook Pro, it's so much lighter, thinner, and sleeker.

Apple's 17-inch MacBook Pro weighs a whopping 6.6 pounds, but back in the day, components were larger and Apple also packed an entire SuperDrive for CDs and DVDs inside. The elimination of large components like this is a major reason why notebook computers today are so much thinner than they were in the early 2010s. The larger size of components in 2011 is also the reason why Apple's 17-inch MacBook Pro has so much more open space than the LG Gram around the trackpad.

The LG Gram offers three USB-A ports, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a micro SD card slot, an HDMI port, and a USB-C port, which is a better variety of ports than we're likely to get in a future MacBook Pro, even if it is larger. Apple has transitioned to all USB-C ports on its notebooks, which we don't expect will change.

Apple's MacBook Pro used a 1920 x 1200 panel, so while it's not quite as nice as the 2560 x 1600 display in the LG Gram, it's not too bad. The current 15-inch MacBook Pro uses a 2880 x 1800 display, and we expect Apple will use a similar pixel density expanded to the new 16 to 16.5-inch size.

We loved the larger size of the 17-inch LG Gram, and we're hoping those rumors of a 16 to 16.5-inch MacBook Pro are accurate. Apple probably isn't going to significantly increase the size of the MacBook Pro, but may instead cut down on bezel size to provide more available display area in a slim package. We wouldn't mind having a super large display in a bigger body, though.

What do you think of the 17-inch LG Gram? Are you hoping Apple releases a similar machine that's closer in size to its original 17-inch MacBook Pro? Let us know in the comments.

Google Announces Android Q, the Next Version of Its Mobile OS with Focus on Privacy

While Android Pie is yet to make its way to even 10 percent of Android devices out there, Google has gone ahead and released the first beta of Android Q. The update is squarely aimed at privacy and security while also adding support for hardware devices and technology that we will see become commonplace in 2019.

For now, Google has only released a beta of Android Q for compatible Pixel devices. The first release of the OS is far from ready for public use and primarily meant for developers to try out Q and prepare their app for all the changes that it brings. The final release of the OS is scheduled for Q3 2019.

Below is a rundown of some of the new features in Android Q.
Precise Location Control

Starting with Android Q, users will have an option to provide location access to an app only while it is being used. Right now, users can either grant or deny location access to an app which leads to many apps silently tracking the location of their users in the background. With this change, users can prevent this and limit location access to apps only while they are being used.

New Runtime Permissions

Google is further improving its permissions model with Android Q to make it more privacy-friendly. Users will be able to control an application’s access to the Photos, Videos, or Audio collections via new permissions. All apps accessing Downloads must make use of the system file picker as well.

Similarly, apps running in the background will no longer be able to suddenly jump in the background. Instead, they will have to use high priority notifications and full-screen intent.
More Privacy

Google is further limiting access to data like IMEI, serial number, and other such identifiers to apps. It will also randomize the MAC address of the device every time it connects to a new Wi-Fi network.
Sharing Shortcuts

Google is finally revamping the Share menu in Android Q and making it notably faster. It is also introducing Sharing shortcuts which will allow users to directly share content with users inside apps. Share targets are published in advance to ensure that the Share UI loads instantly when triggered.

Apart from the above, Android Q also introduces support for a new of new technologies.

Support for foldable devices

Refactored Wi-Fi stack

Adaptive Wi-Fi for high-performance mode

Support for AV1, HDR10, Opus codecs

Improved ART performance

Android Q comes with plenty of other changes aimed at improving the overall experience of using the OS. Almost every aspect of the OS has been touched by Google in some way to ensure its design aligns with Material Design 2. Google will announce more Android Q features at Google I/O 2019 in May where it is also expected to announce some new Assistant related features.

Tips Turn off Auto-Syncing in iTunes (2019)

How to Turn off Auto-Syncing in iTunes (2019)
Part 1. Turn off Auto-Syncing in iTunes 12 or Later

Most iTunes users will have iTunes 12 or a newer version installed. If this is the case, follow these steps:

Connect your iOS device using a USB cable and open iTunes (if it doesn’t launch automatically).

Click the device icon at the top-left of iTunes and then on the “Summary” tab.

Under “Options”, untick the “Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected” box.

After disabling this feature, you can connect your iPhone without iTunes automatically syncing.
Part 2. Stop Auto Syncing in iTunes 11 and Earlier

On the other hand, if you have an earlier version of iTunes installed (iTunes 11 and older), you have to use these steps for iTunes to turn off auto sync.

Use a lightning cable to connect your iPhone, and launch iTunes on your Mac.

Go to “Edit > Settings > Devices”, and select the “Devices” tab.

Locate the option “Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically”, and check the box next to it.

Neither of these solutions are difficult but there are a lot of minor features like this which make iTunes bothersome to use.

How to Change a Person’s Key Photo

If you are using the “People” section of Photos on your Mac, you may have noticed that the application does not always choose the most … flattering pictures to represent the people you love.

Yes Yes. My friends are only gray boxes.

In fact, based on the images chosen, I have to assume that Apple has a sort of algorithm of “worst photo selection”. At least, that’s what I decided to believe. It’s better than thinking that yes, I really look like that, and the pictures do not lie to me.

Anyway, if you want to change the representative image that appears in “People” – which Apple has dubbed “Key Photo” – for one of your identified faces, here’s how you do it. To start, you will click on the “People” sidebar in Photos to access this section.

Then double-click on the person whose key photo you want to edit.

Once you are in the album of a person, find the photo you want to use as a key photo, then right-click or right-click the mouse. In the pop-up menu that appears, select “Create key photo”.

And that’s all! Not only will your “People” main view be updated to reflect the change, but if you use the iCloud Photo Library for synchronization, you will also see the new Key Photo on your other devices. One more thing: you may notice that there is actually a menu command and a keyboard shortcut for this action, displayed under the “Image” menu at the top.If you lost videos from iOS Camerall Roll which are nowhere to download again, you can use Gihosoft iPhone Data Recovery to get back deleted videos from iOS device including iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

Strangely, this command does not seem to work in the “People” section, at least on my Mac; it will work in new albums that I create, but if I try to activate it with “People”, it gets grayed out. So you can use Image> Make a key photo in your albums, but you will use this contextual menu for the “People” section. Bizarre. Perhaps there is a reason for this particular decision regarding the user interface, but I have not been able to understand it.
